My favourite places in Cardiff: Chapter Arts Centre

When I was asked to blog about my favourite place in Cardiff for the Millennium Hotels Guide to Cardiff, one place sprang to mind straight away: Chapter Arts Centre in Canton.

I first visited the centre when I was doing my A-Levels and we went on a school trip to watch a film about the Spanish Civil War. At the time the venue was still in in its old guise of the original converted school building, but I still loved visiting there for the really varied mix of films that it showed, that you would otherwise never have got to see in Cardiff.

A few years after I moved back to Cardiff from university my friend and I lived about 10 minutes away from Chapter and really enjoyed paying a visit there for the films and the great food that they served. However I think it is probably in the last five years that I have spent the most time in Chapter. This is quite ironic that I live further away now than I did in the five years prior to that.

What I love about Chapter is the sheer variety of events going on there, from arthouse cinema to experimental theatre; art exhibitions to photography workshops.

My most recent trip there was a perfect example of why I love the venue so much. Chapter was hosting a screening of the National Theatre’s production of Frankenstein featuring Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Miller. I love the concept of screenings like this that give people the opportunity to experience cultural events which otherwise they would miss out on, e.g. I got to see the David Bowie V & A exhibition even though I hadn’t been able to get a ticket for the exhibition itself.

After collecting the tickets at the Box Office I spent a few minutes browsing the quirky selection of gifts that they had on display in their ‘shop’, from greetings cards to jewellery. There were some really individual pieces that would make great gifts, whether that be something for your nearest and dearest or a treat for yourself!

Whilst I was waiting for my friend to arrive I had a drink in the cafe bar area. I love this space as it is really open and vibrant and you get a real variety of people, from people sat on their own working on their laptops, to groups of friends chatting on an evening out. The bar offers a great selection of drinks (and incidentally holds a great beer festival!). If you are feeling peckish then you can grab a delicious bite to eat from the varied menu on offer.

Even if you haven’t got time to watch a film or theatre performance then I would definitely recommend that you pay a visit to Chapter. It is the perfect chilled out spot to grab a drink and a bite to eat and to pass some time. And I love that you can bump into such a variety of interesting people while you there.

The screening of Frankenstein was brilliant. I had never read the book, so it gave me a real insight into the darker story beyond the “man with nuts and bolts in his neck” which is the clichéd portrayal of the character that we are all used to seeing in films. Johnny Lee Miller’s performance was amazing. He really conveyed the physical aspects of the creature as it came to life, and made you empathise with the character right to the end, despite everything he had done.

If you get a chance to catch the next screening on 1st December then I would really recommend it. One of the things that I love about this production is that Danny Boyle got the actors playing the creature and the creator to swap places every day. I am really intrigued to see how Benedict Cumberbatch plays the role of the creature.

Hopefully I will see you in Chapter soon. Don't forget to say hi if I do!

Life List: Photography and the Northern Lights

When Transun invited me to their recent #ExperienceTransun blogger event I jumped at the chance to attend, as it featured two things which feature on my life list: photography and the Northern Lights. Sadly the event didn't involve a trip to see the Northern Lights, but on the plus side it was in one of my favourite local venues, Chapter Arts Centre in Canton.

Transun offers numerous Northern Lights experience trips to the Arctic Circle of Northern Finland and Sweden. I thought that the night-time photography workshop was a really interesting way to engage bloggers and to get us all involved.

As I only have a compact camera and iphone to take photos, I arranged to borrow a camera to make sure that I could make the most of the session.

Simon the photographer who was leading the workshop has travelled around the world taking photos, including to the Northern Lights (the lucky thing!). He was fantastic (and very patient!) at handling a room full of enthusiastic but chatty bloggers!

I learned a lot during the workshop and finally understood terms like shutter speed; aperture and ISO and how you can manipulate each of these to take the best photos for the conditions and/or type of photo you want.

Here are some of the images that I took on the night. They aren't great (major understatement!). But I wasn't too disappointed given that I had never used a DSLR camera before or had much experience of taking night-time photographs. Usually any artistic-looking blurry lights are more down to luck than any creative thought process!

In addition to talking us through all of the technical settings on our cameras, Simon also gave us some top tips for taking photos if ever we do make a trip to the Northern Lights:
  • Be prepared. Apparently the freezing cold temperatures in the Arctic Circle can drain your camera batteries really quickly, so make sure that you pack a few spare batteries for your camera. Can you imagine how disappointed you would be if you were there and then your battery died before you could get some good shots?!
  • Whilst we are on the subject of what to pack for a Northern Lights trip (apart from your thermals obviously!), be sure to pack a tripod. In order to get great shots of the movement of the Northern Lights you will need a slower shutter speed which can be tricky if your hands start shaking! In the absence of a tripod I resorted to using traffic bollards when we went on our photography hunt outside Chapter.
  • Don't just take the obvious photos when you go on holiday. Think about taking photos of your journey there and where you are staying to avoid looking like you have just lifted your photos from a travel brochure! Simon also noted that often hotels and travel companies organising the trip might be interested in purchasing the images.
Although my photos weren't great on the night I am determined to keep trying the techniques out so that I can finally take some decent night-time photographs. And hopefully one day (*crosses fingers*) I will be able to put my skills to the test in the surroundings of the Northern Lights. Thereby ticking two items off my life list at once! I am even thinking of signing up for a photography course.

You can find out more about the workshop over on the Transun blog.

How to get your wish-list for 'free'

For many years I was guilty of spending my money on lots of cheap 'fast-fashion' items as opposed to investing in pieces that would last for years to come. However over the last year or so I have been making an effort to reduce the quantity of pieces that I buy and rather invest in a few key pieces each season.

Here are some of my top tips:

1. Adopt a 'One in-One out' policy
Every time I purchase an item I now make sure that I get rid of at least one item from my closet. To me this is a win-win situation - I get more space in my closet so that I can actually see what I have in there (!) and my local Tenovus charity shop gets a donation. One of the unexpected benefits of this is that rediscovering pieces at the back of my closet can feel a bit like getting new clothes. 'New' clothes for free - what's not to love?!

2. Take a look at your closet
No, I am not suggesting that you study the construction and fixtures and fittings of your wardrobe, but rather take a long hard look at the items that you already own. Are there any 'gaps' in your wardrobe, i.e. do you have an excess of casual skirts, but are missing a high-quality smart winter coat? This works on two levels. Identify which missing pieces would really help to 'pull together' your closet. Equally, if you find that you have an excess amount of a particular item *, consider donating some of them to your local charity shop or selling them via one of the designer resale sites like Style Sequel.

* In my book numerous breton stripe tops don't count. They are a classic, and perhaps more importantly really versatile piece. If they were good enough for Coco Chanel...

Cue superfluous image of a breton top!

3. Use cashback sites where possible
Once you have identified the pieces that your wardrobe needs then why not use a cashback site such as Quidco to purchase your items. For those that don't know, Quidco is a site which gives you a percentage of your spend back. The website does this by getting an affiliate commission from the retailer. If you are going to buy an item anyway then to me it is a no-brainer to go via a site like this and get cashback on your purchase. Sometimes the sites also offer exclusive voucher codes which can help you save on your purchases.

4. Save to spend
OK I realise  that if I was very sensible then the above headline would read 'Save to save', but hey ho! I currently have my eye on a few investment pieces which are out of my budget. Therefore in my version of being frugal I am going to make sure that any earnings from putting points 2 and 3 into action are put directly into a dedicated savings account. Only once I have saved enough via this means will I invest in the pieces I want and which more importantly will last for years to come. Below is one of the items which is top of my wish-list.

Mansur Gavriel tote

Of course the ultimate wish-list item item for me would have to be this beauty - a girl can dream!

I would love to know what your approach to purchasing the higher-priced items on your wish-list is. Are you a 'buy now, worry later' kind of girl or a 'save to spend' lady?

Project 78 continues.

I can't believe that it has been nearly a month since I last posted. The last 4 weeks have flown by, what with a lovely weekend with school friends in Pembrokeshire; working on my CIPR course and decorating the house (or Project 78 as I jokingly call it!). Well when I say the house, the last few weekends have been taken up with painting the lounge. We opted for a bright white to act as a contrast to my boyfriend's dark brown 3-piece leather suite. Unfortunately the room required more coats than we had anticipated, so my last 2 weekends feel like they have drowned in a sea of Dulux 'Absolute White' paint!

However, now that the painting is finally finished we were able to get the sofa etc out of storage and have a proper lounge area. The walls are white and we opted for oak floorboards. To add a bit of interest, I chose teal and orange as accent colours. It is great having all the furniture in, so now I am on the lookout for the finishing touches.

I was recently given some John Lewis gift vouchers, so I have been browsing their website to try and find what I am looking for.

As the white walls are quite stark, I am on the hunt for some colourful prints. I love typographic prints, so these two will definitely be making an appearance on my walls!

Although I love the bare floorboards, it is still nice to have something cosy underfoot. I love this watercolour rug.

Nearly all of my books have been packed up since we moved, so I can't wait to finally be able to out then all on shelves. I don't want anything too bulky, so something like this would be perfect.

I have some cool grey & cream Orla Kiely planters in the bathroom, so I am thinking that maybe I could bring some OK to the living room too. Love how the pattern on this vase is subtle, with just a hidden splash of colour.

Alexander McQueen : Savage Beauty is coming to London

At last! The Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibition, which was one of the most successful ever held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, is FINALLY coming to the UK.

Last night it was announced that the exhibition will be running at the V & A from March 14 to July 19 2015. Tickets went on sale this morning, but the website is currently experiencing a high volume of traffic and a few problems as a result. This is one exhibition I definitely cannot miss, so will be booking my tickets ASAP. It may be nearly a year until the exhibition opens, but given the McQueen's amazing body of work, it will definitely be worth the wait. The McQueen pieces in the Isabella Blow exhibition which I went to see recently were absolutely beautiful.

Jil Sander & Maison Scotch bargains at TK Maxx

Just a quick post to share some of my latest style bargains picked up in TK Maxx. For me, the store has long been a treasure trove for designer pieces at less than high-street prices, e.g. a classic black Elizabeth & James blazer which I get lots of wear out of (and am wearing as I type!) with a 75% discount. Therefore I always pop in when I am passing, to check out what's instore.

And today's visit didn't disappoint. I managed to pick up a sweatshirt from one of my favourite labels, Maison Scotch for £7 (a 94% saving) and a pair of Jil Sander sunglasses for £29.99 (an 87% saving).
Whilst I was there I also spotted lots of great pieces including silk tops by Elizabeth & James for £30,  Marc by Marc Jacobs sunglasses for £37 and Tom Ford sunglasses for £58 (originally £260!). I have been wanting a pair of black Tom Ford sunglasses for ages and would have snapped them up if they had been black, but unfortunately they were tortoiseshell, and I already have a pair of brown Tom Ford sunglasses. But now that I know they do stock Tom Ford sunglasses in there, I will definitely be checking out the sunglasses section there every time I pop in.

There was a great selection of designer labels instore: from Karl Lagerfeld blazers to Pucci and Missoni handbags, so definitely worth paying a visit. Let me know if you do manage to snap up any style steals of your own.

Way of Wagamama

Are you guilty of repeat ordering the same dish when you go to one of your favourite restaurants? I know that I certainly am. Whilst it makes sense, given that you are know you are going to get something you really like, it can get a bit boring after a while. Therefore I was very intrigued when an invite from Wagamama popped into my inbox inviting me to their #WayofWagamama event to discover my new favourite dish on their menu.

Wagamama's research has shown that once their customers have found a dish they love on their menu, a large number of them tend to stick to it every time they visit. Sadly that means that we've been missing out on lots of wonderful dishes that the Wagamama Executive Chef Steve and his team have been perfecting at Wagamama HQ. The #WayofWagamama campaign is designed to get customers to try something different.

For this event we had been invited to select our favourite dish. In my case it was Firecracker Prawns. However, in a twist, the team didn't prepare that for me, but rather Steve chose two alternative dishes which he thought I would like based on my favourite dish.

The first dish which was made for me was the vibrantly coloured Prawn Chilli Men, which was delicious. It had a great combination of sweet and spicy flavours which was different to the fiery hit of Firecracker Prawns. The different levels of flavour worked really well together.

I had been impressed enough with that, but Steve and his team excelled themselves with the second dish - Chicken Raisukaree. I was really pleased to get this as it had caught my eye when I sat down at the table and saw a picture of it on the placemat (a genius idea from Wagamama, as seeing how great the dish looked would definitely have made me order it). The creaminess of the coconut sauce contrasted with the zinginess of the lime and the heat of the chilli. The sugar snap peas added some crunchy texture to the dish.

One of the best things about the evening was getting to hear Steve talk about how his travels around the globe have inspired the dishes on the menu. It was really interesting finding out how he takes ideas from dishes he finds and transforms them into the dishes you find in a Wagamama branch near you.

We were also lucky to have food psychologist and nutritional therapist Dr Christy Ferguson on hand to tell us what our food choices said about us. Apparently people who love dishes with chilli tend to be thrill-seekers!

Laura from Side Street Style with her favourite dish, Mushroom Ramen

To crown a fantastic evening, Steve served us an off-menu dish which whilst it initially raised a few eye-brows, was a runaway success. Can you guess what it is?

It was ice-cream with a Katsu curry sauce! It might sound quite random, but the two worked brilliantly together. It was absolutely gorgeous, and definitely one of the most interesting desserts I have ever had!

So, what are you waiting for? Make your way to Wagamama right now. But whatever you do, don't just order your usual dish. Thanks to Steve and his team there are plenty of other delicious dishes on offer. Sadly not the Katsu sauce and ice-cream dish quite yet though. One day!

What is your favourite Wagamama dish?

My Month in Instagram : March

March has been a jam-packed month for me. I started the month with a wonderful day in London attending the Isabella Blow & David Bailey exhibitions. I am so glad that I got to see the Isabella Blow exhibition before it closed. It was a fascinating insight into her life and career at the forefront of British style, working with designers such as Alexander McQueen and Philip Treacy.

Since I was up in London for the day I went to see the David Bailey exhibition, Stardust,  at the National Portrait Gallery. The legendary photographer has an amazing and varied body of work spanning six decades, and featuring everyone from pop stars to Papua New Guinea tribes-people. I picked up a print of Jean Shrimpton for what will be our new home office space. I would highly recommend this to anyone even remotely interested in fashion or photography. I purchased the accompanying audio guide via the App Store, which features David Bailey himself discussing his work. I found that getting to hear the story behind it from the man himself added another dimension to viewing his work.

I was very excited to book tickets to see Caitlin Moran in July. I loved her book How to be a Woman, so can't wait to see her live. I went to a sparkling wine tasting with my friend Liz, which was not only great fun but we managed to learn a thing or two aswell. Liz was VERY excited to sample the champagne that they served at the Royal Wedding! Our staff choir took part in a Sports Relief fundraiser with other choirs led by Sing & Inspire. It was great fun, and wonderful to see lots of happy smiley faces bursting into song as soon as they heard the Match of the Day theme tune!

Last week I was lucky enough to attend TEDx Cardiff, which was held in the Wales Millennium Centre. It was a brilliant day, filled with a host of inspirational speakers, from two men who travelled around the world in a Tuk Tuk to promote global education; to a journalist turned baker who set up her own company, The One Mile Bakery, who shared her passion for making and sharing food with those we love.

For Mothers' Day, I took my Mum to Bute Park, as she wanted to see the daffodils in bloom. We are really lucky to have this space right in the heart of the city. It looked absolutely beautiful in the Spring sunshine, and the trees in full blossom. After our stroll through the park we went for tea and cake in the charming Pettigrew Tea Rooms which is located on the edge of the park. If you are in Cardiff and get the chance then you should definitely pop in for one of their fabulous cakes. I opted for the Blood Orange and Almond cake, which was delicious, accompanied by a pot of White Peony and Rosebud tea.

How Pinterest changed my closet

When Virgin Media contacted me to find out how I use the internet to consume fashion, it really got me thinking. My hours spent browsing the racks at Black White Denim had been the first time in ages that I had devoted a block of time to browsing new season looks in person. Rather, nearly all of my most recent purchases have been snapped up online.

For someone who loves to shop and who could (and has!) quite easily whiled away a day just window shopping, this might be quite surprising. However, in a period where I have got lots of different things pulling on my time, online shopping means that I can still update my wardrobe even if I haven't got time to browse the boutique racks.

I honestly can't imagine shopping now without the internet. From the very beginning of a season, the internet allows me to draw style inspiration from far and wide, whether it be by watching live streams of fashion shows or collating looks that I love on Pinterest. After many years of purchasing lots of random items, in recent years I have made much more of an effort to think about what pieces I need to add to my closet to make it work better for me. Doing this before purchasing results in less items languishing unloved at the back of my closet and more items that I love and get lots of wear out of.

Here are some of the items which I am currently coveting on Pinterest.

When I first started using Pinterest it had more than a bit of novelty value for me, but as I added things to my boards and followed more people, I began to find it a really useful tool to not only plan my new season purchases, but also to discover ways of refreshing my existing pieces.

Once I have settled on the pieces that I need to add to my closet, I love it when I find an independent boutique which manages to translate some of the in-store experience into an online offering. Black White Denim is a prime example of this. My first purchases from them were via their website. When I was lucky enough to get to visit the store, I was able to get the full Black White Denim experience. For me, the experiences are complementary, with the website meaning that I can still purchase some of Jo's brilliant edit, even if I can't make the trip to Wilmslow.

So, how do you get your fashion fix? Are you still wedded to browsing the racks of your local boutique, or have you swapped the physical retail space for online stores? Or like me, do you like to have the best of both worlds?!

Out There Interiors

As you will know, I have been busy over the last few months with moving house and then embarking on the subsequent DIY involved in renovating every room in the house. We are still not quite finished, but we are getting there slowly! We are currently working on the lounge after having had new floorboards put down. I am looking forward to making the lounge a relaxing but (hopefully) stylish space where we can relax at the end of the day. However, I am already planning what I want to do with the next room on the list - the study.

We are planning on using a room on the ground floor as a study/small lounge. It will be great to have a dedicated and organised space where I can blog and work on my CIPR assignments. And also to retreat to if I want to chill out and read.

You will see from my interiors Pinterest board that my taste in interiors is slightly eclectic. I am a big fan of Abigail Ahern's school of interior design and also mid-century modern furniture. I like to mix up eras and textures in the same space to try and give a room a bit of personality.

Here are some of my recent finds on one of my many internet trawls for fabulous pieces for the home. These are from Out There Interiors, which has a really quirky mix of pieces designed to cater for a variety of tastes in interiors.

Since we moved, I have become a big fan of monochrome interiors. You will see from the selection above that although the items are monochrome, I have mixed up textures and influences to keep it interesting. I know that the Las Vegas style light might be too much for some people, but I love the fact that it is a bit unexpected.

Despite my increasingly monochrome leanings, I just can't help myself. I love to throw a bit of (very bright!) colour into the mix. I think the mix of perspex, industrial style metal and bold prints will look great together.

Technically, the deer hook would go in the hallway just outside the study. In case you are wondering, it is not just a wall decoration. It is designed to hold a bike on the wall, saving much-needed space. My boyfriend rides his bike everywhere, and it currently lives in our hallway. I think the deer would provide a flash of colour and also be extremely practical. A win-win situation!

I would love to know your taste in interiors - classic; shabby chic; ultra-modern?

Vogue Festival tickets on sale

Tickets went on sale yesterday for this year's Vogue Festival, taking place in the Southbank Centre on the weekend of March 29-30. This year, the style bible will be welcoming another amazing selection of fashion industry insiders to share their experiences and wisdom with fashion lovers. The list of speakers reads like a dream closet: Valentino, Phoebe Philo, Manolo Blahnik, and Mary Katranzou, to name just a few. I have yet to attend a Vogue Festival, and every year when it comes around, I always wish that I had purchased tickets. So, could this be the year? I may not be able to stretch to a Celine tote, but I am sorely tempted to purchase a ticket for the Phoebe Philo talk, and that's just for starters!

You can find out more about the event at www.vogue.co.uk/voguefestival

Will you be attending this year's event?

Black White Denim

One of the things that I have loved the most about getting into blogging and social media is the fact that I have met some really lovely people, who I never would have met in real life. Four such ladies are Kate, Selina, Philippa and Jo. We all 'met' on Twitter over a shared love of fashion. And last year we all met in real life for the first time, together with the fabulous Penny, for a tweet up in Wilmslow. Why Wilmslow I here you ask? Well one of the reasons is that Jo owns an amazing boutique there called Black White Denim. The boutique takes those three words as part of its core aesthetic, and throws in a splash of colour to mix things up a little bit for those who don't want to live life solely in monochrome.

Maison Scotch sweatshirt - £90

etre cecile sweatshirt, £110

This weekend I travelled up to Wilmslow to stay with one of my best friends who I have known since we met as Freshers in Liverpool many years ago. As if staying with her and her lovely family wasn't fun enough, I rounded off the weekend with another Wilmslow tweet-up with my Black White Denim ladies. Sadly, Penny couldn't join us this time.

Zoe Karssen sweatshirt , 2nd Day leather t-shirt

First stop was of course the boutique on Alderley Road. Jo has amazing taste and this is reflected in the brilliant edit of established and newer labels instore: J Brand; Bella Freud; Avelon; etre cecile, and Maison Scotch to name just a few. I could quite easily have snapped up all of the stock instore (a girl can dream!) but here is a selection of my favourite pieces.

5 Preview sweatshirts

Don't worry if you don't live in the North-West though, as the store has a fabulous website where you can get your hands on Jo's brilliant edit of clothes, which always succeeds in being both on-trend every season, and offering key pieces which you will be loving for seasons to come.

While we were there Jo let us choose a piece from her brand new range of jersey basics, named after the store. I love the concept behind the range, so will post about it in a separate blog post.

Guess the Prize

A ever so slightly delayed Happy New Year to you all! It has been a while since I last wrote a proper post. I don't know where the time has gone, what with Christmas, working on my CIPR qualification, and also trying to fit in some DIY in the (yet to be complete house!). However, one of my goals for this year is to get back into the blogging habit, as I have missed blogging. Watch this space!

One factor which didn't help my lack of blogging was the fact that my mobile internet signal was less than great when we moved. I am in the process of looking at various broadband deals, so it was quite spooky timing when BT contacted me to tell me about their Big Broadband Sale.

BT is currently offering their BT Infinity package for £7.50/month, which is half price. Now you know I love a bargain, so that sounds like a great deal to me. When I looked at their website, they are also offering a £60 Sainsbury's voucher, when you purchase it online.  Wrong supermarket I know, but "every little helps"!

As if that great package wasn't enough to put a smile on your face, tomorrow BT will be celebrating by streaming the first live gameshow on Twitter.

Here's how it will work:

* You will have the chance to win a bundle of themed prizes by interacting with a live game show during 5 hourly slots (12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm). Within this time you will have a 7 minutes and 50 seconds period to answer correctly.

* Within the live stream, a presenter will ask Twitter users to spot the £7.50 bargain amongst a range of different priced prizes that run past on a ‘game show’ conveyor belt. The winner will win all of the prizes featured on the show. Prizes include Xbox 1, Home Entertainment system, Barclays Premier League tickets and many more!

* Each successful tweet will go into a prize draw made up from correct guesses tweeted in during the stream. Once the time is up, a winner will be selected and announced live. Once the stream is complete, the screen reverts back to a countdown until the next one.

* If you fancy your chances at winning some prizes then here is all you need to do:

Guess the item valued at £7.50. Tweet @BT_UK with your answer, making sure to include the hashtag #GuessThePrize . Simple!

And if you aren't lucky enough to win during one of the live streams, then don't worry. Following the final stream - just after 4.08pm - an extended prize draw will be open for those who missed out during the day, featuring an image showcasing a bundle of prizes that can be won. The competition will close at 9pm, and the winner will be announced shortly after.

I for one will be taking part, in what I like to think of as the Generation Game (Google it if you are too young to remember!) for the broadband generation! Do let me know if you are lucky enough to win!

Right, back to some DIY for me at the moment. There is some flat-pack IKEA furniture with my name on it!
